About Dr. Kirton

Dr. Raymond Mark Kirton is a citizen of Guyana and the holder of the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) (Distinction) from the University of Guyana, Master of Science (M.Sc.) from Georgetown University, Washington D.C.  and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from The University of Texas at Austin, U.S.A. His professional experience spans more than four decades of university teaching, research, and administration.

At the University of Guyana, he served as Senior Lecturer and Head, Department of Political Science and Law (later becoming the Department of Government and International Affairs), Head of the Graduate School of the Social Sciences, Assistant Dean, Faculty of Arts and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences.  Dr Kirton later joined the University of the West Indies and served as Director (ag,) Institute of International Relations, The University of the West Indies. St. Augustine. Trinidad from where he retired. He is currently an Honorary Senior Fellow at the Institute of International Relations at the University of The West Indies. In 2017, he received a national award – The Golden Arrow of Achievement – from the Government of Guyana for his contribution not higher education and regional integration.

He has published several refereed articles and book chapters and  has co-edited books including  “Governance ,Conflict Analysis and Conflict Resolution”, (with Cedric Grant), “Selected Essays on  Contemporary Caribbean Issues :An International Relations Perspective “ (with Marlon Anatol), “Contemporary Issues in  Caribbean and Latin American Relations” (with Marlon  Anatol) and   “The Changing Political and Socio-Economic Environment in The Caribbean and Latin America : Prospects and Challenges” (with Paulo Gustavo Correa and Marlon Anatol). He also co-authored, with Khellon Roach, “A History of The Institute of International Relations: 50 Years and Beyond “. His most recent book. “Building Bridges in the Amazon- Guyana – Brazil relations into the 21st Century” is available in English and Portuguese.

Dr. Kirton’s current research interests include regional integration, Latin American politics and government and migration and human security.
