DAY 1

Join us on September 13-14, 2022, for a two-day celebration of the lives of the Caribbean people of Panama and the Panama Canal Zone co-sponsored by Pan Caribbean Sankofa, the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries, and the UF Center for Latin American Studies. The event will take place on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, and many of the activities also will be available online.

If you will be participating in person, please use this registration form: https://pcmc.eventbrite.com

Activities occurring simultaneously in-person and online include a talk by Dr. Caroline Lieffers, Assistant Professor of History at The King’s University, on disability, health care, and the importance of community for Panama Canal laborers; an exploration of the life of Milton Garvey, an important Panama playwright whose work was a part of the emerging Black internationalism movement; and a trip back in time to the Silver town of La Boca in the 1950s as seen through the memories in Enid Hall’s notebooks. Participants attending in person also will get an opportunity to visit the Nahmad Panama Canal Gallery exhibition on health and medicine and the Canal; viewing archival materials held in the Panama Canal Museum Collection, and a special screening of the documentary Diggers by filmmaker, Roman Foster, who will introduce the film and answer questions.
