Brazilian Performer Malayka SN Discusses Monstrosity, Drag and Human Liberation
October 19 | 2 - 4 pm
Reitz Union, Roon G310

Malayka SN graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Bahia. She is a performer and currently develops research and works related to Drag Queen performativity, with emphasis on the aesthetics of monstrosity and its powerful reverberations when manifested in popular environments, bars, and the streets. As a graduate student in visual arts, she thinks of artistic education in a decolonial way and brings to her productions questions and thoughts that involve the dissident doing under a triad of identities, body, and space. They promote, in the Bahian “soteropolitana” scene, a performance night called "The Third Strangest of the World” in which Malayka SN integrates the Afrobapho and Monxtra House collectives into a night of performance. She draws on Afrofuturism and builds makeup and clothing based on body art.
