Fellowships support work in history of military penal institution in Spain’s American and Asian colonies

Affiliate faculty Max Deardorff (History) has been awarded two fellowships for 2026-2027! Dr. Deardorff is part of the inaugural cohort of the Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS), which will host 15 scholars in residency in Lisbon, Portugal. Additionally, Dr. Deardorff was named a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) in 2026. Both grants support the development of Dr. Deardorff's forthcoming book, At Sea and Ashore: Convicts, Slaves, and the Galleys of the Spanish Global Monarchy, a social and cultural history of the galleys, a military penal institution in Spain’s American and Asian colonies. The galleys’ manacled oarsmen contributed to the earliest age of globalization, shaping local port cultures and economies.
