Rural communities in Michoacan have diverse natural resources that, due to social systemic failures and external pressures, have become over exploited causing grave deterioration. This also limits potential local development and market access. If local development can be improved through conservation, then a management plan closer to sustainability can be achieved. In turn, if this assessment can be made beforehand - before a development plan is implemented and precious resources are compromised before the success or failure is ascertained- then it would be more practical and useful in development strategies.
