Outreach Program-Resources

Outreach Lending Library

The Outreach Program maintains a collection of more than 500 resources on Latin American and Caribbean topics in our Lending Library. The collection includes books, curriculum guides, posters, videos, "traveling suitcases," and more. Educators may borrow these items at no charge.

Traveling Suitcases

Traveling Suitcases are artifact collections reflecting daily life in specific countries and regions. Other suitcases represent other aspects of the culture such as music and traditional celebrations. These unique collections of books, toys, music, product packaging, currency, national symbols, and other items have been collected by UF faculty, students, and friends while traveling in Latin America. Many teachers use them as a learning center, letting students handle items and discuss their uses.

Latin American Wikispace Resources

Latin American Ecosystems
Understanding Afro-Latin America
Discovering Caribbean Diversity
Intro to Latin America
Espaço português como língua estrangeira
IB History of the Americas Paper 3

The Center is working with K–12 teachers to create a series of Wikispace resources on a variety of Latin American topics to be used by individual teachers or in conjunction with professional development events.

Network of Business Language Educators (NOBLE)

NOBLE is a new and evolving community which brings together professionals across all disciplines and all languages to collaborate and exchange ideas for building programs and curriculum that will prepare our students to be global leaders. The primary goal of the group is to integrate global relevance into the curriculum and better prepare students with language and culture skills for the 21st century workplace.

Fulbright Hays Group Project—Andean HATSS Group Materials

In 2008 the Center was awarded Fulbright Hays Group Project Abroad funding to take twelve K–12 teachers to Ecuador and Peru for four weeks. During that time teachers attended seminars, met with local indigenous communities, and visited a variety of cultural sites. From their experiences, teachers developed lesson plans and materials pertinent to their interests. The site is still in the building phase, so please come back to visit it again soon when we will have even more resources available.

Latin American and Latino Studies Reader

The reader consists of 20 texts that enhance students' reading skills and knowledge of Latin American and Latino Studies. All texts meet Florida State Curriculum Standards. Hard copies or CDs of the readers are available upon request. You can download the reader as a pdf file here.

Workshops

Workshops are held on the UF campus for teachers who want to incorporate Latin American Studies into their curriculum. The workshops typically feature presentations given by UF faculty from disciplines such as anthropology, political science, history, music, sociology, wildlife science, botany, and others. Participants include K–12 teachers as well as community college instructors. The program also offers workshops for teachers in cooperation with school districts around the state.

Speakers Bureau

University of Florida faculty and graduate students offer presentations on Latin America and the Caribbean to community organizations, business groups, and schools. UF faculty and outside experts may be invited to give public lectures on research findings and current events.

Cultural Events

The Center coordinates a variety of cultural events that are open to the public, including art exhibits, musical and dance performances, lectures, and film festivals. See our events page for more information.
