Outreach Program-Library

The Outreach Program maintains a collection of more than 500 resources on Latin American and Caribbean topics. The Outreach Program's Resource Library Online Catalog describes the materials available from the library, including books, curriculum guides, posters, videos, "traveling suitcases," and more. Educators may borrow these items at no charge. Below is information that should help you understand the borrowing process and how to find the items that best fit your needs.

How do I find the best resource for my needs?

We have found that most of our borrowers approach classroom discussions of Latin America on a country-by-country or subject basis. As a result, we have organized the online database by country and topics related to Latin America. You can also search for items by resource type (children's literature, curriculum guides, scholarly books, videos, etc.). Should you need further guidance in locating items appropriate for your objectives, please feel free to contact the Outreach staff.

How do I borrow items from the library?

All borrowers must have a current lending agreement on file with the Outreach Program. You may also download a lending agreement form from our website and send it to us by mail or fax. Once your agreement is on file, simply contact the Outreach Program by email (outreach@latam.ufl.edu), telephone (352-273-4723), or fax (352-392-7682), with your request for materials from the database.

Is there a cost involved for borrowing?

We understand the budgetary restrictions that educators face and try to minimize the costs for borrowing materials. We only ask that you pay for return postage, including the modest fee charged by the United States Postal Service for insuring the items. When you borrow an item, we will let you know the amount for which it should be insured.

How many items can I borrow at one time, and for how long?

You may borrow up to five items at a time for up to two weeks. These five items may include no more than one traveling suitcase and two videos. A suitcase may be checked out for up to three weeks.

What is a traveling suitcase?

Traveling Suitcases are artifact collections reflecting daily life in specific countries and regions. Other suitcases represent other aspects of the culture such as music and traditional celebrations. These unique collections of books, toys, music, product packaging, currency, national symbols, and other items have been collected by UF faculty, students, and friends while traveling in Latin America. The suitcases represent: Bolivia, Brazil, Caribbean, Central America, Colombia, Costa Rica, Day of the Dead, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Music, Peru, Puerto Rico, Southern Cone, and Venezuela.
