FHC offers summer workshops for teachers each year that provide a collegial forum for teachers to exchange ideas and strategies with peers and professors. The workshops are five day programs that consist of an exploration of curriculum relevant humanities topics through field trips, readings, lectures, discussions, films, and cultural experiences. Florida Humanities Council Mini Grants for Community Organizations

This grant ($2,000) aids teachers in the state of Florida to develop a project that both addresses a pertinent topic in humanities education and involves the community at large. Projects should engage humanities scholars, include critical thinking and analysis, and utilize a cross-disciplinary approach.

Americas Children’s Book Award

The Americas Award is given in recognition of U.S. works of fiction, poetry, folklore, or selected non-fiction (from picture books to works for young adults) published in the previous year in English or Spanish that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States. The award winners and commended titles are selected for their (1) distinctive literary quality; (2) cultural contextualization; (3) exceptional integration of text, illustration, and design; and (4) potential for classroom use.

Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program

For U.S. teachers, this opportunity involves a year, semester, or six week direct exchange of teaching positions with a counterpart in another country teaching the same subject(s) at the same level. Fulbright program staff in the U.S. and abroad match U.S. and overseas candidates in the spring of each year. Fulbright staff then propose matched-exchanges that each candidate and each school involved in the application process must approve before final selection to the program takes place.

Opportunities are listed in late October for summer seminars for teachers. There are two programs specifically targeted to teachers. They offer Summer Seminars and Institutes in the United States and for up to six weeks abroad on various topics for teachers of all disciplines. They also offer Summer Stipends for teachers who have areas in which they would like to pursue research for at least two months in the summer. International programs are highly competitive. Recipients receive up to $6,000 for expenses, depending on the program length and requirements.

National Council for the Social Studies Award for Global Understanding
