Courses
The Master of Arts in Latin American Studies (MALAS) with a concentration in Business Environment gives students graduate level interdisciplinary training relevant for careers dealing with business and investment in Latin America. Candidates are required to have undergraduate majors or minors in business, finance or economics. Some Latin American coursework and background is desirable.
Requirements
Students in the Center for Latin American Studies MALAS
program with a Business Environment concentration must complete a total
of 30 course credits, write a thesis on an interdisciplinary topic relevant
to the concentration and demonstrate proficiency in one Latin American language.
Students must take at least 15 credits within the business concentration.
There are three required courses for eight credits, while the remaining
seven credits can be fulfilled from a list of optional courses selected
in consultation with the concentration coordinator.
The remaining 15 credits required for the MALAS degree will be selected
from the Center’s list of approved Latin American courses, in consultation
with the Center’s graduate coordinator and must include LAS 6938-Issues
and Perspectives in Latin American Studies.

LABEP offers Business in Brazil a summer study program in Rio de Janeiro in collaboration with the Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC) and the Instituto Brasil-Estados Unidos (IBEU). Credit hours are awarded in business and Portuguese language.

International Business Management: Semester in Brazil This is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), which allows students to earn credit for business classes at a Brazilian university. Students will attend the Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Rio or the Universidade do Paraná in Curitiba. Portuguese proficiency is required upon departure for semester of coursework. International Business and Financial Markets Study Tour This graduate course provides a small group of graduate-level business students with firsthand exposure to selected financial markets and business practices. The two credit course consists of a pre-trip component of four classes followed by site visits to key organizations and companies in Brazil, Chile, and Argentina (on a rotating basis).
