Book Scholarships for UF Students from Latin America and the Caribbean

Description

The Center for Latin American Studies announces a competition to award two merit-based book scholarships of $500 per semester to students from Latin America and the Caribbean who are enrolled in the Latin American Studies Minor or Certificate Programs at the undergraduate, graduate level, or the MA program in Latin American Studies.

The next competition will be for the Spring 2009 semester.

Under Florida statute, section 1009.21 (10)(e), students from Latin America and the Caribbean who receive scholarships from the state or federal government qualify as Florida residents for tuition purposes. The Center's book scholarships will be funded from overhead generated by federal grants, thus making the awardees eligible for "in-state" tuition status.

The scholarships will be provided for a maximum of four semesters as long as the student maintains a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) and demonstrates progress towards fulfillment of the requirements for the Latin American Studies Minor or Certificate, as certified by Dr. Richmond Brown, the Center's Associate Director for Academic Programs.

Scholarship applications will be reviewed and ranked by a committee composed of Center for Latin American Studies faculty.

FLAS Summer Fellowships

Description

Through support from the U.S. Department of Education, the UF Center for Latin American Studies offers Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. Summer FLAS Fellowships support participation in an intensive study program of a less-commonly-taught Latin American language (i.e., Brazilian Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Maya, Quechua, etc.). The fellowship covers the majority of program-related fees. When possible, the award also includes a travel stipend.

Applicants will be judged by their academic record and by the relevance of the study of the proposed language to their program of study and intended career. Priority is given to students who are pursuing advanced level language proficiency in one of the less-commonly taught languages, to Master’s students who are likely to pursue government service, and to students enrolled in the Center’s academic programs – the M.A. in Latin American Studies or the Latin American Studies Graduate Certificate.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as graduate students at a U.S. university. Their program of graduate study must include a less-commonly-taught Latin American language, as well as Latin American area studies. Recipients must demonstrate that the summer program will provide a minimum of 140 contact hours of instruction at the beginning and intermediate levels or 120 contact hours at the advanced level. (Both the UF Language and Culture Program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the Haitian Summer Institute meet these requirements.) Applicants are encouraged to attend programs that are at least six weeks in length.

Non-UF students can only apply for a Summer FLAS Fellowship from the UF Center for Latin American Studies if they plan to attend one of UF’s language study programs, such as the UF Language and Culture Program in Rio de Janeiro or the Haitian Summer Institute (held at FIU).

Applicants wishing to use the award for a study abroad program outside the U.S. must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency. Students at the beginning level of language proficiency can only use a Summer FLAS Fellowship to study outside the U.S. if there is no program offered in the target language in the U.S.

Applicants who would like to attend the UF Language and Culture Program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a Summer FLAS Fellowship must have completed two semesters of introductory Portuguese or one semester of accelerated Portuguese (the latter is offered during Summer A at UF.)

Application Deadline

The deadline for applications for the 2008 competition is March 3, 2008.
