Donor's Spotlight

Carol French Doughty Memorial Fund

The Doughty Family has established the Carol French Doughty Memorial Fund in honor of the memory of their daughter. Income from the endowment will support graduate student research in Latin America and Latino communities, with an emphasis on educational issues. The fund’s purpose reflects Carol’s longstanding engagement with Latin America and its people along with her strong belief that teaching was an indispensable calling in support of society and nation. The grants will be awarded through the Center for Latin American Studies’ annual Field Research Grant Competition.

Safa Graduate Student Travel Endowment

Dr. Helen I. Safa, Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Latin American Studies, made a gift of $50,000 to the Center for Latin American Studies to create the Safa Graduate Student Travel Endowment fund. Income from the fund will provide travel grants for UF graduate students affiliated with the Center to present papers at the international congresses of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), the largest international association of professional Latinamericanists. Dr. Safa was Director of the Center for Latin American Studies from 1980–85 and President of LASA from 1983–85.

Boonstra Family Research Fellowship

Margaret Beshore Boonstra and her children made a gift of $30,000 to create the Boonstra Family Research Fellowship Endowment in honor of the memory of Ambassador Clarence A. Boonstra and in recognition of the family’s longstanding involvement with Latin America. Income from the endowment will support research grants to outstanding graduate students pursuing thesis or pre-dissertation research in Latin America or the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. The grants will be awarded through the Center for Latin American Studies’ annual Field Research Grant Competition.

Farris Scholarship Fund

Colonel Glenn Farris served as Foreign Student Advisor at UF from 1963 to 1973, following a distinguished military career. During the 1960s Colonel Farris helped hundreds of recently exiled Cubans to gain admission to UF and successfully pursue degrees. A group of these Cuban-American alumni, who are now successful in business and the professions, initiated a fundraising effort to endow a scholarship fund in honor of Colonel Farris. The Farris Scholarship Fund is used to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the MA in Latin American Studies program who have excelled in academics, who have demonstrated leadership skills, and who are preparing for a career dealing with Latin American or Hispanic American affairs.

Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar Chair

The Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar Chair in Latin American Studies was established in 1991 with a gift from Bacardi Imports and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Matching funds were received from the State of Florida, raising the endowment to $1 million. The Bacardi endowment enables the Center to invite distinguished scholars and public figures to teach, lecture, mentor students, and carry out research at UF. Since 1992, 14 individuals have held the chair with expertise in diverse fields, such as economics, politics, tropical conservation, history, dance, and literature. The 2011 Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar is Jean Stubbs, a distinguished scholar in the field of Cuban history.
