Guest Artist Recital
Eduardo Lobo, Guitar & Rafael dos Santos, Piano
November 4 | 7:30 PM
Music Building Room 101

The School of Music and Center for Latin American Studies are proud to present a guest artist recital by Eduardo Lobo (guitar) and Rafael dos Santos (piano) on Sunday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Building Room 101.

Duo Rafael dos Santos and Eduardo Lobo formed in 2011 from a common interest in research and performing the diverse spheres of Brazilian music, from chamber music’s totally written scores to popular music and the ability to improvise. Friends for over 20 years, Eduardo and Rafael met at the University of Campinas’s Music Department, having previously performed together in other settings. The duo’s first performance was at the Clube do Choro de Paris in April 2012, at the 8th Choro Festival. They have since been dedicated to taking the results of their work to the stage and the studio. In 2015, they released their first CD, “Viajante”, which was financed by the Campinas Cultural Investment Fund. In the same year, they recorded Radamés Gnattali’s Carioca Concerto No. 1 for electric guitar and piano, with the Campinas Symphony Orchestra and conductor Victor Hugo Toro.

Rafael dos Santos gained a doctorate (DMA) in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa and divides his time as pianist, arranger, composer and conductor, with much of his work largely focusing on popular music, parallel with his work as a researcher and university professor. Professor at Unicamp’s Music Department for over 30 years, Rafael is one of the founders of the Undergraduate course in Popular Music; a pioneering course in the genre in Latin America and an important reference in the area. For more than 10 years he has coordinated a research group dedicated to studying the history, style and production of popular music, primarily Brazilian. He graduated from and taught at the Sao Caetano do Sul Arts Foundation in Sao Paulo and went on to study and perform for several years in London and the United States. Rafael has worked with some of the greatest names in Brazilian music, including singers Consiglia Latorre and Márcia Tauil and instrumentalists Paulo Moura, Nivaldo Ornelas, Roberto Sion, Roberto Menescal and Paulo Sérgio Santos. He appears on more than 10 albums as pianist and arranger.

Eduardo Lobo is a guitarist, professor and Doctor of Music from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). He was one of the winners of the 7th VISA prize for Brazilian Instrumental Music with the group Quatro a Zero, with whom he has launched three albums. He appears as arranger and guitarist on the albums “Abrideira”, co-produced by Maurício Carrilho and “Canção do Amor Distante”, together with Ana Salvagni. Researcher of the work of Brazilian composer Radamés Gnattali, he carried out the digitization, editing and recording of the Carioca Concertos No. 1 and No. 3, recorded alongside the Campinas Symphony Orchestra and conductor Victor Hugo Toro. He is currently a professor of both practical and theoretical subjects on the Music course at the Brazilian Nazarene University.
