This research looks at the experiences, critiques, and creative capacities of autonomous Afro-Brazilian communities in Bahia as they struggle against the structural violence of the Brazilian state. While much popular discourse in Brazil and Latin America, generally, identifies progressive political parties as purveyors of social, political, and economic justice, the experience of these autonomous communities suggests that there remain serious shortcomings to any forms of liberal politics.
