Do You Know What You Think You Know?: Challenging Stereotypes and Perspectives on Immigration in the Past and Present
Gallery Talk, The Cuban-American Dream
Tuesday, April 11, 3:00-4:00, LACC
In this gallery talk, PhD candidate Alexis Baldacci discusses the challenges and opportunities that creating an exhibit in collaboration with the libraries presents for a historian. Beyond the familiar skill sets of research, analysis, and writing, the process of conveying a memorable and striking message through an exhibit required attention to aesthetics and new skills like balancing spatial constraints, managing an overabundance of information, and determining how best to highlight the libraries’ extensive holdings. Our goal of encouraging visitors of all backgrounds to engage the emotionally-charged histories of migration with an open mind was also motivated by a desire to add historical context to the complex and hot-button debates about immigration that characterize today’s political climate.
