Marcelo Salazar is originally trained as an Industrial Engineer at University of São Carlos, Brazil. Currently, he works as a program officer for Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), based in Altamira, Pará. He has worked for 15 years on the ground, to support sustainable development and defend the rights of traditional communities from the Amazon. He participated in several protests, studies, and documentaries related to Belo Monte hydroelectric dam, Belo Sun mining plant, land grabbing and illegal Logging. He has also worked in extractive reserves and protected areas of the Amazon, establishing projects to promote and experiment other development models that enhance forest-based livelihoods.
