Laura GutiÉrrez, author of Performing Mexicanidad: Vendidas y Cabareteras on the Transnational Stage (U Texas P, 2010), winner of the Annual MLA Prize in U.S. Latina & Latino, Chicana & Chicano Literary & Cultural Studies.
Political cabaret mostly transpires in Mexico city’s nightlife. Its practitioners are mostly left-leaning queer or queer ally performers who use drag culture to critique of normative gender systems. Dr. Gutiérrez is an Associate Professor in the Performance as Public Practice Program in Theatre and Dance at the University of Texas at Austin & Associate Chair of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.
