Solsiree del Moral named 2023 Bacardi Scholar

Solsiree Del MoralDr. Solsiree del Moral has been named the Spring 2023 Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar at the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies. Dr. Del Moral is Professor of American Studies and Black Studies and chair of the American Studies Department at Amherst College.

Dr. Del Moral’s research encompasses Afro-Latin American History, U.S. Afro-Latinx Studies, and Caribbean History, with particular focus on Puerto Rico, the circum-Caribbean, and U.S. colonialism. She is the author of Negotiating Empire: The Cultural Politics of Schools in Puerto Rico, 1898‒1952.  Dr. Del Moral has received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education, and Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship Program.

During her time at the Center, Dr. Del Moral will teach the course “A History of Afro-Latin America,” which will survey the history of Africans and their descendants in Latin America and the Caribbean, with special focus on gender and sexuality. Dr. Del Moral is also co-editor of the upcoming book series “Caribbean Crossroads: Race, Identity, and Freedom Struggles,” along with Center affiliate faculty Dr. Lillian Guerra (LAS/History). The series will be published by University of Florida Press. Both Dr. Del Moral and Dr. Guerra will participate in a panel event on the book series on October 24, 2022.

About the Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar Chair

The Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar Chair in Latin American Studies was established in 1991 with a gift from Bacardi Imports and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Bacardi endowment enables the Center to invite distinguished scholars and public figures to teach, lecture, mentor students and carry out research at the University of Florida. Since 1992, 19 individuals have held the chair with expertise in diverse fields, such as economics, politics, tropical conservation, social anthropology, history, dance, and literature.
