The Center for Latin American Studies has established a fund to support students in our Master programs who experience unforeseen financial difficulties that are beyond their control. Students will receive a one-time payment of up to $5,000 to cover expenses related to circumstances such as a major accident, fire, natural disaster, medical emergency, and death of an immediate family member. Priority will be given to students who do not have a graduate assistantship (GA, TA, RA), fellowship, achievement award, or other scholarships.

Students must provide a statement detailing the circumstances that caused the emergency/hardship and including the following:

  • Show that you experienced unforeseen circumstances that were beyond your control
  • Submit a completed financial need form, listing income and expenses
  • Provide documentation to support your statement

Applications will be reviewed as received by a committee of LAS staff and faculty.

* Please be aware that any financial award has a potential impact on student’s financial aid package. Depending on other awards the student has received, it is possible that receiving this fund would make a student ineligible for awards that have already been disbursed to them, creating a situation where they would owe back already disbursed aid. The Center will check with the Office of Financial Aid before making the award so that they can assess the impact on the student’s financial aid package.
