Health and Policy in Latin America and the Caribbean Bacardi Family Lecture Series to Begin - 9/2/09

Arachu Castro, Assistant Professor of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will present “Responding to Public Health Priorities in Latin America and the Caribbean: From Academic Research to Policy Setting to Clinical Practice,” on Monday, September 14, 2009 at 7:30 pm in the Keene Faculty Center of Dauer Hall at the University of Florida. Dr. Castro’s lecture is the first of five presentations to be given this fall as part of the Health and Policy in Latin America and the Caribbean Bacardi Family Lecture Series.

MacArthur Foundation selects UF to help develop global master’s program - 6/30/09

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has awarded the University of Florida nearly $1 million for a new master’s program that will train students to assist impoverished populations through sustainable development.

Teodoro Petkoff, Internationally-Recognized Venezuelan Journalist and Politician, to Speak at UF - 2/24/09

Teodoro Petkoff, founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Tal Cual newspaper in Venezuela, will speak at the University of Florida on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the Smathers Libraries (East), Room 1A at 4 pm. He will speak on “Venezuela: Political and Economic Realities.” 

Conference on Urban Issues in Latin America Hosted by UF - 1/13/09

The 58th Annual Conference of the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies will be on “The Urban Divide in Latin America: Challenges and Strategies for Social Inclusion.” The conference will take place January 28-30, 2009 at the J. Wayne Reitz Union on the UF campus. The conference is co-sponsored by the UF College of Design, Construction and Planning.

LAS Faculty Named UF International Educators of the Year - 11/14/2008

The University of Florida International Center announced that the recipients of the 2008 International Educator of the Year Award are Charles Wood, Professor of Latin American Studies/Sociology and Juan Carlos Molleda, Associate Professor of Public Relations.

Center sponsored Latin American Business Symposium and Career Workshop - 11/06/08

The Center for Latin American Studies sponsored a Latin American Business Symposium and a Career Workshop for students, faculty, and the business community. The events served to deepen our understanding of what is happening in Latin America and its significance for business and to help UF students prepare for Latin American-related careers.

Humanities Grant Awarded to UF Center for Latin American Studies - 6/5/08

The Center for Latin American Studies was recently awarded a grant of $12,460 from the Florida Humanities Council to organize a film and speaker series at the Hippodrome State Theater in Gainesville, FL.   The series will feature six films addressing issues that affect and connect Florida and the Caribbean.  Each film will be shown twice and will be introduced by a noted scholar on Florida-Caribbean relations followed by a question and answer period after the film.  The screenings will take place once a month from September 2008 to March 2009 and are free to the general public. 

Fulbright Hays Group Project Abroad Grant Awarded to the UF Center for Latin American Studies - 5/19/08

The University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $66,574 from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fulbright Hays Program to implement a four-week curriculum development project in Ecuador and Peru entitled, "The Andean "HATSS" Project: Reaching High Achievement for Teachers and Students of Spanish in Florida Schools."

Internationally-Recognized Conservationist Named Distinguished UF Alumnus - 4/15/08

The University of Florida will recognize Dr. Claudio Padua (MA in Latin American Studies 1987, PhD in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation 1993) with its Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2008.   Dr. Padua – one of Brazil’s foremost academics – is recognized internationally for his local, national, and international efforts in the field of biodiversity conservation.

Former Costa Rican Presidential Candidate to Deliver Bacardi Lecture on Free Trade Agreements in the Americas - 2/12/08

Professor Ottón Solís, the UF Center for Latin American Studies Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar, will deliver the 2008 Bacardi Lecture on “Winners and Losers in Free Trade Agreements:  The View from the South,” on Wednesday, February 27, 4 pm, Presidents Room, Emerson Alumni Hall.  Dr. Mark Rosenberg, Chancellor of the State University System of Florida and an expert on Central America, will be the commentator.

Former Costa Rican Presidential Candidate is Appointed UF’s Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar in Latin American Studies - 1/31/08

Ottón Solís, founding president of Costa Rica’s Citizens Action Party, has been appointed the UF Center for Latin American Studies Bacardi Family Eminent Scholar for Spring 2008.  Solís has twice been a presidential candidate, losing the 2006 elections by less than one percent of the vote.

UF Professor wins two Book Prizes - 1/15/08

University of Florida Professor of Modern Latin American History, Dr. Jeffrey D. Needell has been awarded two book prizes by professional organizations for his book, The Party of Order: The Conservatives, the State, and Slavery in the Brazilian Monarchy, 1831-1871 (Stanford University Press, 2006).

UF Emeritus Professor Awarded Highest Honor of Professional Association - 9/17/07

Dr. Helen I. Safa, Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Latin American Studies at the University of Florida, was presented the Kalman Silvert award of the American Studies Association (LASA) at its recent Congress, September 5-8, in Montreal.

Dr. Helen Safa Endows Graduate Student Travel Fund - 2/7/2007

Dr. Helen I. Safa, Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Latin American Studies, has made a gift of $50,000 to the UF Center for Latin American Studies to create the Safa Graduate Student Travel Endowment fund.

Dr. Carmen Diana Deere, Professor of Food and Resource Economics and latin American Studies and Director of the UF Center for Latin American Studies, was honored at the January 2007 meetings of the American Historical Association.

USDE Supports Center for Latin American Studies - 10/5/06

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The U.S. Department of Education has renewed its support of three major University of Florida programs—the Center for European Studies, the Center for African Studies and the Center for Latin American Studies—awarding a total of nearly $5 million through its Title VI National Resource Centers and Foreign Language and Area Studies grant programs.
